20 Fit Moms That Actually Lift!

Happy Mother's Day from Tiger Fitness!

In 1905, West Virginian Anna Jarvis initiated a campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized American holiday. Earlier that year her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis (a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers during the Civil War), passed away. Anna's goal was to have sons and daughters set aside a day each year and honor the work and life of our mothers, "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world."

In 1914, Mother's Day became an official day of celebration in the United States. That year President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making the second Sunday in May a day to celebrate and honor our mothers.

It wasn't long thereafter that Hallmark and similar companies began the commercialization of Mother's Day. By the 1920s, Anna Jarvis was bitter about the "exploitation" of this beloved holiday. So bitter, in fact, that she initiated a campaign to rescind Mother's Day as a national holiday.

The United States isn't the only country that sets aside a day each year to honor mothers. Here are some other noteworthy celebration dates:
  • Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japans and dozens more - Second Sunday in May
  • Iraq, Egypt and Saudia Arabia - March 21st, or the vernal equinox
  • Ireland and UK - 4th Sunday of Lent
  • Mexico - May 10th
  • Norway - Second Sunday of February
  • Portugal and Spain - First Sunday in May
  • Romania - March 8th
  • Russia - Last Sunday of November
