Our body requires protein for many different key functions in your body. A protein is a long chain of amino acids that primarily facilitate communication between cells. These amino acids contain many hormones that carry out an endocrine role. Every transporter and enzyme contains proteins.

The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences recommends eating 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. A study published in 2013 by Pasiakos and colleagues studied participants for a 21-day period who created a 40% calorie deficit — 10% through increased exercise and 30% from dietary manipulations. The 39 adults were split into three groups — one ingesting protein at the current recommended amount, another group at two times the recommended amount, and the last group had three times the recommended amount of protein.

The study found that all three groups lost significant amounts of weight after the 21 days, but the two groups that ingested the most protein significantly lost more fat. Around 64-70% of the weight lost in the two higher-protein groups came from fat.
