View full detailsAgmatine, also known as (4-aminobutyl)guanidine, is an aminoguanidine discovered in 1910 by Albrecht Kossel.
Agmatine is a chemical substance naturally created from the chemical arginine. It's been shown to exert modulatory action at multiple molecular targets, which provides bases for more research into potential applications of agmatine.
In short, agmatine may help lower your blood pressure and blood sugar. It produces nitric oxide, which is a chemical that dilates arteries and improves circulation. This means there's a good chance you'll feel the pump.
Research also suggests that agmatine may help alleviate anxiety and depression. Lastly, multiple studies suggest that it may also benefit your memory and cognition due to it acting as a neurotransmitter.
There have been several studies performed, here are a few of the potential medical uses for agmatine.
Glucose Regulation
Agmatine has hypoglycemic effects due to the result of the simultaneous modulation of several molecular mechanisms that are involved in blood glucose regulation.
Cardiovascular Benefits
Agmatine will produce a mild reduction in heart rate and blood pressure by activating both central and peripheral control systems via modulation of several molecular targets.
Kidney Function
Agmatine has been suggested to enhance glomerular filtration rate and exerts nephroprotective effects.
Neurotransmission
Agmatine has been referred to as a putative neurotransmitter. Synthesized in the brain, agmatine is stored in synaptic vesicles, accumulated by uptake, and released by membrane depolarization.
Research into agmatine-specific receptors and transmission pathways continue.
Opioid Liability
Agmatine can potentiate opioid analgesia and prevent tolerance to chronic morphine in lab rodents. More studies have emerged showing evidence that agmatine inhibits opioid dependence and relapse in several animal species.
