Goal setting. You are probably thinking I would have you blinging out your strength training book, or asking you to grab some sparkly pens and doodle your little hearts on days that you do well, kinda like kindergarten?
Maybe in your own goal-setting endeavor you write down everything that you need to do, checking things off your list during the day. You are making progress, but still find a sort of depression in the act of doing it.

Well, we are headed for a new year. Come January 2018 your goals become your life - for most people. You know, the new year and all that.
We dream big come that day. "I am gonna squat 700 pounds,” or... "I can't wait until I can get my butt into that bikini."
Never mind that you are barely squatting 150 pounds, or that you weigh 500 pounds and seven months isn’t enough time to get bikini-ready. Your big dreams are so out of the realm of possibility!
However, I am a complete and utter dreamer. I believe if you believe you can do something, often times you can.
My wish is that the New Year's resolutions we make on the first of January will continue on until the next New Year.
Unfortunately, they don’t.
I am sure you see all the peeps that want to get healthy during this time of year. Your gym is flooded with them. However, come March, it's like crickets in your gym. On the plus side, you can finally get a machine.
Secretly, you're glad none of them have the staying power to last throughout the year.
Well, I am here to counteract everything you know about goal setting. I am going to tell you that goals should be out of the realm of what you think you can do.
In my opinion, they should be so over-the-top that you think, "That is such a dumb goal, so over the top. I don’t even want to write it down on a piece of paper."
Let me tell you a little story. I knew a patient that was deathly ill with AIDS. He had been tested ad nauseam and yes - he definitely had AIDS. His partner died of AIDS.
It was pretty much a matter of time for him.
He meditated. He said he would talk to his body. His numbers should have had him dying. Seriously, it was horrible.
Yet, he was enjoying life, going out, vacationing, working. He said he had healed himself. Everyone thought he was completely out of his mind.
Like totally nutso.
He is still alive 14 years later. He credits this with outrageous thinking; magical thinking.
I always think of life like the Matrix movie. You remember how Neo had to pick which pill to take to open his eyes to a new reality?
How he woke up in a world in which he had to think a different way in order to save the world?
Well, goals should be the same way.
I feel goals should be so far outside of our comfort zones that we hesitate even writing them down. It's scary to write something down that you don’t know if you can even complete.
Actually, it's pee your pants scary...
Here are my tips to get the most out of your 2018 and beyond.
Setting Crazy Goals for 2018
1.) Write down your dream
Seriously, write down the craziest thing you have always wanted to do. Even if you get scared putting it to paper, write it down.
In Henriette Klauser’s book, she explains that putting it on paper alerts the part of your brain known as the reticular activating system to join you in the play. Your brain is activated and ready to rock and roll.
2.) Map a plan
Once your dream is actually on paper, write ways you are going to get there.
Maybe you’re a 135 pound dude that wants to get a 700 pound deadlift. Write down beside your dream all the steps you are going to take to get there.
3.) Add dates to steps
This is optional - but I write down dates to those steps. It makes it time sensitive and it might even go beyond a year.
4.) Let's go crazy!
I write crazy goals down with abandon. Yup. I want to lose 160 pounds, I want to do a bodybuilding contest, etc.
Everyone, especially my husband was skeptical. I wrote down things I needed to get there. I wrote dates next to each step I needed in order to reach my goal.
Let me just tell you, this didn’t happen in a year. I had steps that took a year, but the actual goal was realized over a few years.
5.) Slow down
Don’t be in such a rush. Write down your crazy goals, but know that the process to complete them may take longer than you think.
That is why - with my big goal - I write down things I can do monthly, weekly, and daily to get me to that crazy goal.
6.) Don’t get disappointed
If you're humongous (and crazy) goal isn’t met when you think it should be, and you have written down ways to get there with dates in which to do it, and you still aren’t done... Who cares? You got further than you would have if you hadn’t written it down, right?
Whats the deal with us getting all upset over getting better??Crazy, over the top goals should be the gold standard. You should list your main goals with no filter.
The reason I say this is that you don’t want to hinder yourself. Think bigger. Like really big.
Because if you believe in your goals, see them on every sheet of paper that you are writing on, your brain is triggered. You start to believe that you can get to your goals because you are writing about them, you are seeing them and you are thinking about them on a daily basis.
Heres the Take-Away
Don’t get all negative if you don’t reach your crazy, over-the-top goals this year. Maybe it will take you four years, but your smaller goals - the things you wrote down that can get you to that next level - your steps, if you will, should be ticked off and something to celebrate.
I hear so many people say, “I have 120 pounds to lose, and this month I only lost 20! That sucks!” I used to be one of those people. Now, I look back and am mortified, because 20 pounds in a month is pretty damn good.
Let’s say your goal was 25 pounds in a month and you didn’t meet it. You only met 20 pounds. Then I would have to say to you, think about your goals in a different way.
You have done better than you did a month ago. You are headed in the right direction as far as your goal.
Revisit your goals, maybe change the timeline, maybe keep it the same. Be encouraged, not negative about getting closer to your goal.
If you are encouraged, you will have laser focus on your goal and are ok with not meeting a deadline. You will meet your goal, it's just a matter of time.
