ProSupps Hyde Power Potion Tasting Panel Review

Energy drinks have exploded in popularity the past few years. Used as a replacement for everything from morning coffee to soft drinks, and even pre-workouts, the surge in energy drink consumption and availability cannot be denied.

And, it’s no longer independent beverage companies (i.e. Coca-Cola) making energy drinks, now supplement companies have started jumping into the fray, seeking their own piece of the energy drink pie.

One of the newest additions to the rapidly expanding energy drink market is Hyde Power Potion from ProSupps, makers of the high energy pre-workout Hyde and an insanely delicious MyBar protein bar.

We’ve got all three flavors of ProSupps new high energy beverage and will see if ProSupps has a potential contender on their hands for “king” of the energy drink market.

Hyde Power Potion Review Highlights

  • 350mg caffeine per can
  • Includes undisclosed amounts of BCAAs, TeaCrine, and several nootropics including N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, Choline Bitartrate, Taurine
  • Zero sugar, carbs or artificial colors
  • Flavors reviewed -- Island Punch, Purple Mist, Cherry Cola
  • Best flavor -- Cherry Cola (and it’s not even close!)

Hyde Power Potion Ingredients

L-Citrulline

Citrulline is a well-known nitric oxide boosting ingredient frequently included in pre-workouts for its ability to generate massive pumps. Seeing it listed in an energy drink is certainly unique and gives credence to the idea that Hyde Power Potion could serve as a potent pre-workout.

To quote ProSupps, “HYDE Power Potion was designed to be the ultimate versatile energy drink. Great for a morning kickstart, midday pick me up or pre-workout option for energizing your training, HYDE Power Potion is a great choice for any scenario.”

To be realistic though, you need a minimum of 3g L-Citrulline to get the enhanced vasodilation, vascularity, and pumps from the ingredient, and we’re fairly certain you’re getting nowhere near that amount here.

Yet another problem of proprietary blends…

Caffeine

Make no mistake, this is the reason you buy energy drinks. It’s not for the pixie-dusting of BCAAs (which we’ll get to next) or the sprinkling of cognitive boosters (which we’ll also discuss), it’s for the heaping helping of caffeine, and Hyde Power Potion is packing PLENTY.

Each 16oz can of Hyde Power Potion delivers a robust 350mg of caffeine, quite the lot when you consider that the only other big name energy drink with 300mg+ caffeine is VPX Sports Bang.

Most other energy drinks on the market (Rockstar, Monster, etc) contain 250mg caffeine or less per full can, so ProSupps definitely isn’t playing around here.

Though, we do have to question if having such a hefty dose of caffeine is actually alienating more of ProSupps potential customers than it attracts as most people probably don’t want 350mg of caffeine all at one time, unless it’s pre-workout that is.

N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine

N-Acteyl L-Tyrosine is an acetylated form of the amino acid L-Tyrosine that is frequently used in lieu of regular L-Tyrosine for its stability in solution and improved solubility of L-Tyrosine. This is a popular nootropic compound frequently found in pre-workouts, as tyrosine is a precursor to dopamine, and subsequently epinephrine and norepinephrine.

Tyrosine helps bolster focus and concentration, and since it enhances dopamine levels in the brain, also may improve creativity.

Doses typically range from 350-1g of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, but again, we’re not sure how much is included in Hyde Power Potion.

Taurine

A nonessential amino acid primarily found in the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle, taurine serves a dual purpose as it supports cellular hydration, and also helps reduce mental fatigue, both of which help improve mental and physical performance, especially during intense exercise or mentally-demanding tasks.

BCAA Blend

Like other energy drinks, Hyde Power Potion is seeking to capitalize on the popularity of BCAA by including a smidge in their can. The three BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) are prized for their ability to stimulate muscle protein synthesis and prolong stamina during training as well as their pro-recovery benefits.

However, those benefits are only realized when you’re getting a minimum of 5g BCAA. Again, we have no idea how much we’re getting here, but seeing as the BCAA blend is listed below caffeine in the proprietary blend, you know you’re getting less than 350mg here.

So, again, the BCAA blend is included mostly for branding and marketing, as are the rest of the ingredients to follow most likely.

Choline Bitartrate

Another popular nootropic is choline bitartrate, which serves to enhance production of acetylcholine (the “learning” neurotransmitter). The bitartrate form is a cheaper, less bioavailable form that isn’t as effective at lower doses as, say, CDP-Choline (Citicoline) or Alpha GPC.

More acetylcholine leads to improved learning, memory, and cognition. It also helps foster a stronger mind-muscle connection, which is another reason Hyde Power Potion could serve as a high energy pre-workout option.

TeaCrine

To provide some incredibly long-lasting energy and sustain the “buzz” from the 350mg of caffeine, ProSupps has included a dash of TeaCrine. Developed by Compound Solutions, TeaCrine is a methylurate that stimulates the mind without impacting the cardiovascular system, which means you get improved focus and alertness without the increased heart rate, blood pressure or “on edge” feeling caffeine can deliver.

We typically like this dosed at a minimum of 100-150mg, which you’re probably not getting here. More likely than not, you’re getting in the area of 25-50mg of TeaCrine per can.

L-Carnitine L-Tartrate

One of the premier forms of L-Carnitine, L-Carnitine L-Tartrate binds the compound to a molecule of tartaric acid, which gives is superior bioavailability and absorption in the body. L-Carnitine L-Tartrate improves fatty acid oxidation (“fat burning), which spares glycogen stores for more intense activity. It also enhances recovery from exercise and improves androgen receptor density, helping your anabolic hormones (i.e. testosterone) work more efficiently.

CoQ 10

CoQ10 is an extremely powerful antioxidant used in almost every cell in your body for energy production. It’s naturally occurring in meat, fish, and whole grains and has been extensively researched for its benefits on athletic performance and cardiovascular health.

Hyde Power Potion Tasting Panel

At the time of our tasting panel, we had the initial three flavors of Hyde Power Potion:

  • Island Punch
  • Purple Mist
  • Cherry Cola

Before we the flavor reviews, just know that all are extremely sweet (sucralose is the FOURTH ingredient in the prop blend), with not very much carbonation, which works against Hyde Power Potion as carbonation helps give some “bite” to beverages and tames the sweetness.

Island Punch - smells like Hawaiian punch and tastes extremely similar to Hawaiian punch, but with an overly sweet sucralose aftertaste.

Purple Mist - tastes like a mixture between a grape lollipop and super-concentrated Dimetapp. Again, super-sweet aftertaste that’s too much for us to want to drink the whole can in one outing.

Cherry Cola - WINNER!!! Cherry cola is sweet, but not nearly as sweet as the other flavors or even as sweet cherry coke you’d get in a can.

Our clear favorite was Cherry Cola. It’s a unique flavor that no other energy drink has really nailed (or even attempted). It’s also the most balanced flavor of the three we tried, and the one we could easily see ourselves coming back to time and again.
