Carnitine is probably best known for its essential role in burning fat. Specifically, it helps transport fatty acids, the main building block of fat, into the mitochondria of your cells where they can be burned for energy. Less well known is the fact carnitine participates in a wide range of biochemical pathways that impact your performance everywhere from the gym to the bedroom. Different forms, or analogs, of carnitine have been studied in this regard. QUADRACARN conveniently combines four of them -propionyl-l-carnitine, l-carnitine l-tartrate, n-acetyl-l-carnitine and l-carnitine- into a single formula along with Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract. Gymnema is actively being studied for its potent anti-diabetic properties.
It’s no exaggeration to say that QUADRACARN may support your performance inside the bedroom. As most of us are intimately aware, blood flow plays an important role in sex. To get around your body, blood must travel through some 100,000 tortuous miles of arteries, capillaries and veins, collectively known as vasculature. Evidence provided by in vitro, animal and clinical studies suggest that at least two of the carnitine analogs in QUADRACARN may support normal vascular health, leading to improvements in blood flow and some of the many bodily functions dependent on it.
The naturally-occurring carnitine analog propionyl-l-carnitine (PLC) is indicated for patients suffering from peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and other cardiovascular diseases. According to the American Heart Association, PAD affects an estimated 8 million Americans. The older you get, the greater your risk. PAD is a condition in which blood vessels located outside the heart and brain are blocked, thereby impeding blood flow. Patients with this condition may have sub-normal levels of nitric oxide (NO) and/or prostaglandins, both of which stimulate the opening of blood vessels, or vasodilation. PLC may enhance the actions of these compounds.
That’s not to say that you must have PAD to benefit from the vasodilatory effects of PLC, or other forms of carnitine. This is demonstrated by QUADRACARN user testimonials like those shown above and clinical studies. For instance, 3 weeks of supplementation with l-carnitine l-tartrate was shown to increase vasodilation in young, healthy men and women following a high-fat meal. In contrast, those getting the placebo experienced a decrease in vasodilation after eating the same meal1. (Even a single high-fat meal can impair vascular function in healthy people. In turn, this may impair the ability of your cardiovascular system to adapt to stress.)
Anecdotally, individuals who supplement with PLC report that it improves both libido and erectile performance. How this occurs is unclear and needs to be validated by clinical studies. What it suggests is that blood flow (e.g. greater vasodilation) may not be the only factor at work.
Androgens are hormones involved in the regulation of sexual drive and function, muscle mass, cardiovascular function, lipid metabolism, mood and more. The best-known androgen is testosterone. How effectively they work depends to a large extent on the number of androgen receptors (ARs) present within and on the surface of your cells. To transmit a signal, an androgen molecule usually binds to an AR. This sets in motion a cascade of events that may lead to increases in protein synthesis, vasodilation, changes in mood, etc.
The more ARs your cells carry, the more responsive they will tend to be to androgens. You’ve got more “androgen power,” if you will. Male or female, this may translate into improvements in sexual performance and your ability to gain lean mass and strength from your workouts, for instance. A study performed on healthy, resistance-exercising subjects showed that supplementation with l-carnitine l-tartrate increases AR levels2. The authors proposed that this might enhance their ability to recover from exercise. Considering the many roles played by androgens in the human body, the benefits may go well beyond this.

Resistance exercise stresses your muscle cells mechanically and metabolically. Here, too, QUADRACARN can be of assistance. When subjects supplemented with l-carnitine l-tartrate for 3 weeks, there was less evidence of free radicals, muscle damage and soreness after they performed workouts involving high-rep squats3. MRI scans revealed that those taking the carnitine analog experienced less than half of the muscle damage experienced by subjects taking a placebo. As others have done before, the authors of the study suggested that carnitine might increase blood flow, improve the delivery of oxygen and enhance the production of ATP. ATP is the ultimate energy source for muscle contraction and just about everything that goes on inside a cell.
Your muscles would be pretty useless without nerves, of course. They tell them when to contract and at what intensity. The older you get, the more wear and tear your nerve cells, or neurons, suffer. Alongside, your risk of neurological diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s goes up.
Studies on n-acetyl-l-carnitine (NALC) indicate that it may protect neurons from damage and even death. The latter is known as apoptosis. A review article in the scientific journal CNS Reviews states, “[NALC] can also improve the function of peripheral nerves by increasing nerve conduction velocity, reducing sensory neuronal loss, and promoting nerve regeneration. Recent evidence indicates that [NALC] regulates processes that go beyond its classical role in energy metabolism.”4
Neurons, muscle cells and most other types of cell depend on mitochondria for energy. Mentioned earlier, these tiny cigar-shaped structures fulfill more than 95% of your body’s energy needs, a huge responsibility if ever there was one. Not surprisingly, they tend to break down. Termed mitochondrial dysfunction, this has been suggested to be a cause of aging. Mitochondrial dysfunction can impair ATP production and increase free radicals, with damaging consequences. Experimental studies suggest that NALC may slow or even reverse aging by preserving mitochondrial function. In animal studies, NALC has been found to increase mitochondrial mass (number and/or size) in muscle tissue subject to unloading (disuse). Bodybuilders usually focus on building muscle mass, but if you’re interested in living a long, high-performance life, then don’t neglect the mitochondrial kind.

When we think of aging, we often think of parts of our body falling apart or even falling out. Take hair, for instance. A study published in the journal Experimental Dermatology finds that l-carnitine l-tartrate extends the period of maximum hair growth when cultured human hair follicles are treated with it5. It also stimulates the hair follicles to increase in length and reduces the number of follicles undergoing apoptosis.
As readers of The Book of Muscle Synergy are well aware, sarcopenia, the term used by medical scientists for age-associated loss of muscle mass, is a major health problem. No one is immune, and it begins pretty early in life. Supplementation with l-carnitine (the fourth form of carnitine found in QUADRACARN) may help, even in centenarians. In one study, 100-year-old subjects took l-carnitine or a placebo for 6 months6. Those taking l-carnitine experienced a reduction in total cholesterol, an increase in muscle mass (by over 8 lbs), a reduction in body fat (of nearly 4 lbs), a decrease in muscle fatigue, improvements in walking capacity, and an increase in cognitive performance. Not bad at all.
1. What makes QUADRACARN different from other carnitine products?
QUADRACARN contains a unique ratio of four forms, or analogs, of carnitine: propionyl-l-carnitine (PLC), l-carnitine l-tartrate, n-acetyl-l-carnitine (NALC) and l-carnitine. They’ve been combined with Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract in order to support healthy glucose metabolism and insulin action.
2. Can I experience the same benefits provided by QUADRACARN by taking l-carnitine or another form of carnitine by itself?
This seems unlikely based on available scientific evidence. The human body naturally produces roughly 1.9 mg of l-carnitine per kilogram (2.2 lb) of bodyweight per day. Some of this is converted into NALC and PLC, each of which serves a different, and possibly some overlapping, roles. Nutritional scientists have also produced other analogs of carnitine, such as l-carnitine l-tartrate. Each analog is absorbed and metabolized by the body differently and is capable of producing different effects. For instance, once PLC or NALC enters the body, its propionyl or acetyl group, respectively, can enter any of a number of different pathways. Thus, by combining several analogs into a single formula you can potentially enjoy a greater range of benefits. This may explain some of the dramatic testimonials received by BI from satisfied QUADRACARN users (see above).
3. How should I take QUADRACARN and how long will it be before I notice results?
On workout days: Take 1 serving (3 tablets), 3 times daily. Swallow each tablet separately with cold water.
On non-workout (rest) days: Take 1 serving (3 tablets), twice daily.
The secret to using QUADRACARN effectively is to be consistent! Like glucose (“blood sugar”), glutamine, creatine and many nutrients, your body produces its own supply of carnitine and absorbs some from the diet. In order to benefit from supplementation, it is generally thought that you must take enough of a nutrient to significantly increase the size of your body’s existing, or endogenous, supply. For instance, if you ingested a single dose of 10 mg of glutamine, you wouldn’t notice anything. This is partly because several grams of it normally circulate in your body. It’s similar with carnitine. Also, 100% of each dose you take is not absorbed, whether it comes from the diet or a supplement. Thus, to significantly increase your endogenous carnitine pool, several weeks of supplementation may be required.
It may take anywhere from 3-6 hours for the level of carnitine in your bloodstream to peak after a single dose of carnitine, and up to 3 days before it achieves what scientists refer to as a steady state. One serving (3 tablets) of QUADRACARN supplies over 1500 mg of carnitine analogs. Taken twice per day, this might be expected to increase the endogenous carnitine pool of a 70-kg (154-lb) person by around 10%. So be patient, persistent and consistent. It will pay off.
4. Can I use QUADRACARN to help me lose weight? I don’t eat too many calories, and I’m working out hard.
Yes. In fact, BI owner Roger Riedinger indicates that during some of their earliest tests they gave QUADRACARN to bodybuilders who were dieting for a competition. What was expected was that the subjects would maintain muscle while losing body fat. Instead, some actually reported gaining muscle when they used higher doses of QUADRACARN. Once the dose was increased to these levels, the results were quite dramatic.
