Protein bars offer a fast and convenient option to satisfy your hunger needs when pressed for time, or just need a snack before a tough workout. Protein bars have exploded in popularity over the past few years and can be find in all shapes, sizes, and flavors.
Compared to many other types of nutritional bars such as energy bars or meal replacement bars, protein bars will typically have a higher proportion of protein than carbohydrates of fats. In general, a bar billing itself as “high protein” will have anywhere between 15-20 grams of protein per serving (i.e. 1 bar).
To keep the carb count in check, many protein bars include sugar alcohols (such as sorbitol) and artificial sweeteners (ex. sucralose). One thing to watch out for when consuming several protein bars in a single day is that consuming too many sugar alcohols has been documented to induce gastrointestinal problems for many people.
Things to consider when choosing a protein bar should include Total Calorie Count (so you don’t exceed your daily goals), grams of Protein, Number of Carbs, Fat content, and list of ingredients (you don’t want a bar full of a bunch of fillers and “junk”).
